Up to 10% of all cancers are hereditary — caused by inherited changes in your genes. MTH Specialty has partnered with Myriad Genetics, the industry leader in hereditary cancer testing, to offer the MyRisk® test right here at our practice.
MyRisk analyzes 63 clinically relevant genes associated with 11 hereditary cancers — including breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, pancreatic, and melanoma. For eligible women, results also include RiskScore®, a personalized 5-year and lifetime breast cancer risk estimate that is twice as accurate as traditional risk models alone.
These are general guidelines based on U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations — Dr. Patel will personalize them based on your individual risk factors, family history, and health goals.
Build a foundation of healthy habits with regular check-ins. Focus on prevention, risk assessment, and establishing baseline health markers.
Begin proactive cancer and chronic disease screening. New 2024 USPSTF guidelines lowered the age for several key screenings.
Expanded cancer screenings, cardiovascular monitoring, and lung cancer screening for eligible smokers. Discuss osteoporosis risk and shingles vaccination.
Coordinated care focusing on managing chronic conditions, fall prevention, cognitive health, bone density, and quality of life.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is the gold standard for evidence-based preventive care. Below are the most important Grade A & B recommendations we follow at MTH Specialty — organized by topic.
What do the grades mean? The USPSTF assigns letter grades A through D based on scientific evidence. Grade A means there's high certainty of substantial net benefit, and Grade B means high certainty of moderate net benefit. Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans must cover Grade A & B services without cost-sharing. Learn more at uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org.

MyRisk® is a hereditary cancer test from Myriad Genetics that analyzes 63 clinically recommended genes associated with 11 hereditary cancers — including breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, pancreatic, melanoma, endometrial, and gastric cancers. The test uses a simple saliva sample (no blood draw needed). For many eligible women, results also include RiskScore®, which gives a personalized 5-year and lifetime breast cancer risk estimate. MTH Specialty has partnered with Myriad to offer MyRisk testing directly at our practice — Dr. Patel reviews your family history during your visit and orders the test if appropriate.
You may benefit from MyRisk® testing if you have any of these: a personal or family history of cancer (especially cancers diagnosed before age 50), multiple family members with the same or related cancers, a known cancer mutation in your family, certain ancestries with higher rates of specific gene mutations (e.g., Ashkenazi Jewish), rare cancers in close relatives, or two or more primary cancers in one person. Dr. Patel will review your full family history during your visit and help you decide whether MyRisk testing is appropriate for you. National guidelines (NCCN, ASCO) inform our decision-making.
Results are typically available within approximately 14 days after Myriad's lab receives your saliva sample. Every patient also receives a free consultation with a Myriad board-certified genetic counselor who walks you through your results. Dr. Patel will then meet with you to discuss what the results mean for your screening and prevention plan — including any specialist referrals if needed.
Most commercial and federally-funded insurance plans cover hereditary cancer testing when medically appropriate, and the majority of patients face no out-of-pocket cost for the MyRisk test. A few business days after Myriad receives your sample, they'll send you a personalized cost estimate before running the test — so there are no surprise bills. Myriad also offers a Financial Assistance Program (MFAP) for patients with high deductibles or co-insurance. We can walk you through coverage during your visit.
Yes. Your MyRisk results are confidential and protected by federal law. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) prohibits health insurers and most employers from using your genetic test results against you. Myriad will not release your results to anyone other than you or Dr. Patel — unless you provide explicit permission. Results are stored securely and never shared with anyone you haven't authorized.
We accept most major insurance plans including Aetna, BCBSMA & BCBS Medicare Advantage, Cigna, Point32 Health, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, Tufts Health Direct, Tufts Medicare Preferred PPO, Wellpoint (formerly UniCare), and United Health. Self-pay options are also available with transparent pricing. Call us to verify your specific plan.
